Can DeepSeek R1 Play Chess? Tested Against LC0

DeepSeek R1 has captured the imagination of many AI enthusiasts. It can help you with coding, research, and a lot more. Have you ever wondered whether it can play chess? Other models can try but usually break the rules after a couple of moves. I was able to get it to play a good Sicilian game against Lc0 for about 14 moves before it lost track of the position of pieces.

What’s more interesting was reading how the model thought about chess moves. It showed me the potential for something like this to be used to help beginners understand moves and tactics better. Of course more training is needed to get these models to avoid breaking the rules of chess.

DeepSeek also took feedback very well and corrected its mistakes but after the 14th move, it continued breaking the rules, so it lost track of the position.
