It is no secret that OpenAI is serious about targeting coders. It is already considering purchasing Windsurf. Codex is its cloud based software engineering agent powered by codex-1. It can work on many tasks in parallel, so you can fix bugs, get answers about your codebase and execute pull requests for review. Each task runs in its own sandbox.
In case you are curious, codex-1 is really a version of OpenAI o3 optimized for software engineering. As the company explains:
“It was trained using reinforcement learning on real-world coding tasks in a variety of environments to generate code that closely mirrors human style and PR preferences, adheres precisely to instructions, and can iteratively run tests until it receives a passing result.”
You can customize Codex with an AGENTS.md file within your repository. If you have used Cursor and other vibe coding apps, you are probably familiar how this works. Codex is not available to Plus users but will be soon.
